Digital Media Asset Management: Storing
Digital Media
In the earlier days, in most of the
applications analog devices were used and things were a bit
complex with these devices. In general analog devices were not
accurate and many errors occurred due to such low accuracy
levels.
Since then there has been considerable technological
advances that took place in the field of electronics and
digital electronic devices came into being. These digital
devices functioned far better than the analog devices and their
reliability is quite high. Only thing you have to do is to
program the digital components to execute the assigned
functions.
Nowadays, people prefer only digital devices because of its
reliability. Many businesses and organizations are required to
manage digital assets such as image, video, audio and other
media assets for their day to day use. The management of such
assets has its own challenges because the procedure for
acquisition, storage and retrieval of a large volume of these
assets requires proper streamlining. Managing these digital
assets is done using digital devices and this task is known as
digital media asset management.
Digital media assets are mainly used in media related
organizations such as newspaper and magazines, Television
production, radio, advertising agencies etc. These assets
include files like photographs, various audio and video files,
slide shows, games and many other such files that include some
graphics and these are in digital form. In order to use these
files effectively the digital media asset management is
used.
Digital Asset Management (DAM) consists of tasks and
decisions surrounding ingesting, annotating, cataloguing,
storage and retrieval of digital assets, such as digital
photographs, animations, videos and music. Digital asset
management systems help the users to manage all the visually
rich files in a proper manner.
Digital media asset management is a subset of digital asset
management system and is relatively a newly developed field
that is well sought after by various industries. For example,
the media either print or TV, require photographs at short
notice for their immediate use as and when they are required.
These media industries operate on a strict time bound schedule
wherein they have to bring the latest news to the public in the
shortest possible time.
In order to do that, they must be in a position to retrieve
digital data received from their reporters quickly. If the
digital assets are stored in an organized way it is possible to
retrieve them easily. These digital files also have to be
stored in a secure way to prevent pilfering. All such tasks
come under the umbrella of digital media asset management
system. Many companies store the digital photographs of their
employees. Call centers record various calls for future
scrutiny. All these digital assets are handled by digital asset
management system.
Nowadays people use the personal computers at home mainly
for accessing digital media such as video games, slide shows,
animations etc. For an efficient accessing of such digital
assets it is essential that such assets are stored in a proper
way. Digital media asset management is very important in such a
situation. TV channels require video and audio clips at very
short notice and they store such items using digital media
asset management system so that they are able to function
smoothly without errors.
Since the digital media asset management is an upcoming
field wherein a lot of new industries go for implementing such
a system in their companies more and more lucrative jobs are
getting created all over the world. This has motivated the
youngsters to take up courses relating to this field so that
their future is secure.
